How We Help

What happens when you work with Pathfinders.

Your investments, taxes, income, insurance, and family decisions all affect each other. When you work with us, we help you sort through those pieces, compare your options, and understand what happens next.

Why good financial advice sometimes means leaving something alone

The Good Roof

A homeowner calls a roofer expecting bad news. After looking it over, the roofer says most of the roof is still in good shape. Maybe there’s a repair worth making, but there’s no reason to redo the whole thing.

Financial planning works the same way. When something you already have is working well, we’ll tell you.

Good advice makes it clear what needs attention, what doesn’t, and why.

Here’s how we figure that out.

How working together works

Here’s what happens, step by step.

We first understand what you have and what you’re trying to solve. Then we compare the options and explain what we recommend. Nothing changes until you decide you want it to.

  1. Discover

We start with what prompted the conversation, what matters to you, what already exists, and what you do not want to lose.

Bring your questions, what you’re trying to accomplish, and the statements or information that show where things stand today. We organize it into a clear picture of your current situation.

  2. Clarify

We sort out what matters most, what isn’t working, what you don’t want to lose, and what we still need to learn.

The questions: What are we actually solving for? What would a change need to improve?

  3. Design

We compare the options that make sense, including leaving things exactly as they are. Then we walk through the costs, risks, limitations, and tradeoffs of each.

What gets compared: what your current plan already does well, the fees and costs of each option, the tax consequences of a change, surrender and transaction costs, liquidity, benefits a change would give up, and what each part of the plan is there to do.

Decision checkpoint

You decide.

We explain what we recommend and why, answer the questions that matter, and ask whether you want to move forward.

You see the alternatives we compared, what each would cost, the tradeoffs, and what is still unknown. Your choices include:

  • Move forward
  • Change the design
  • Keep some or all of what you have
  • Gather more information
  • Bring in another decision-maker
  • Wait
  • Decline

If the best decision is no change, we'll say that — and what would make it worth revisiting.

  1. Implement

We coordinate the changes you approve: the paperwork, account openings and transfers, investment changes, and insurance applications, working with the custodian, the insurance company, and your other professionals. Custodians hold the assets, insurance companies issue the contracts, and tax and legal advice comes from your own tax and legal professionals.

What you authorize: Account openings, transfers, and insurance applications require your signature or authorization. We review the key account details, forms, and contract terms with you before you sign or authorize them.

  2. Guide

We review the plan as your circumstances, the markets, taxes, income needs, and life change, and recommend adjustments when there is a good reason to make them.

    The Map and the Compass

A plan is a map: the best route from today’s facts. Ongoing advice is the compass that keeps you oriented when the route changes. A plan isn’t supposed to predict the future. It’s supposed to help you adjust when life changes.

Roles and responsibilities

Who does what in a Pathfinders relationship.

Good advice depends on clear responsibilities. Here is who handles each part, and where each role stops.

Still Building Toward Retirement

Grow with purpose while the future takes shape.

The building years connect workplace-plan decisions, savings and contribution choices, Roth, pre-tax and taxable accounts, investment risk, family protection, and future retirement-income modeling.

Explore the Building Years
From Savings to Paycheck

Turn what you have built into income you can understand.

A retirement paycheck may draw from Social Security, pensions, market-based income, planned withdrawals, and contractual guarantees where appropriate. The plan also coordinates taxes, liquidity, survivor needs, and continued growth.

Working together

A few things people usually want to know before we talk.

What happens in the first conversation?

By the end of the first conversation, we'll tell you what needs attention, if anything, what we'd need from you, and what the next step is. If there isn't a good reason to keep going, we'll tell you.

Do I have to move everything?

No. The first step is understanding what you have and what it is meant to do. Decisions about accounts come later.

Who is Pathfinders best suited for?

Our primary focus is helping families prepare for and live through retirement. We also work with families in the building years who want investing, taxes, protection, and future retirement decisions to develop as one coordinated plan.

How is Pathfinders compensated?

Depending on the relationship, compensation may include advisory fees, planning fees, and, when an insurance product is used, commissions paid by the insurance company. Before you decide, we explain the compensation that applies, what it costs, and the relevant tradeoffs.

Begin with clarity

Start with the question that keeps coming up.

Bring us what you are doing today and the decision you are trying to understand. We’ll help organize the issue, tell you whether we can help, and explain what we recommend doing next.
